November AP Scoop – Asst. Principal Gilbert

November “Pace Week” Last year at East, we embedded a flexible time into our weekly schedule for students called WIN, which is an acronym for What I Need.  This WIN time is divided into three separate blocks (30-40 minutes) each week to create time for students to meet with a teacher for additional support, explore a new type of learning, or create time for themselves to complete their school work.  Students can choose a WIN session or teachers can “lock” a student in if they see that they are behind.  Survey results last year showed that 80% of students found WIN time valuable.  Although we were happy with these results after the first year, we are always striving to find ways to incorporate interventions that student find valuable and increase that percentage the following year.   This year, we have added a twist to this WIN time and created specific “Pace Weeks” that will be scattered throughout the year.  Pace Week is designed for teachers to “lock” students into specific subject... Nutrition Services Spotlight on Julia Zieman

What is your favorite thing about working for Nutrition Services at Eastern Carver County Schools? I look forward to each day knowing adventure awaits and no 2 days are the same!  I am proud to work in a great district for the past 18 years and to be able to support the students. What is the funniest thing a student has ever said to you? When I first started in the district, a student came and told each staff member “You’re Fired!” This was a daily occurrence. Then one day, I replied, “O.K. then there won’t be anyone to get your lunch”. He said,  “I could stay this once” What is your favorite thing to cook at home? My favorite thing to cook is something for my family and friends, like a big breakfast.  I also enjoy making jams and baked goods. Then give them away as parting gifts. Who has had the biggest positive impact in your life and why? My grandmother Anita, she shared her cooking and canning skills with me! She rarely measured unless it was a new recipe and she saved... October AP Scoop – Assistant Principal Gilbert

October – Behaviors that Support Learning During the course of the year, I plan to highlight various programs or initiatives at Chaska Middle School East in the AP Scoop section of East Points.  This month, our focus is on Behaviors that Support Learning (BSL) and how our staff are using these indicators to provide feedback on student progress.  As our district has transitioned from “traditional” grading practices to standards-based assessments, teachers also want to provide feedback to students/parents that are not necessarily measured by content standards, like behavior, effort, and being responsible.  Our students at East are also using the Behaviors that Support Learning as themes during advisory time lessons on Thursdays to teach and reinforce these skills.  Our district has identified six Behaviors that Support Learning; Strives for Personal Best, Shows Respectful Behavior, Interacts Collaboratively with Peers, Engages in Learning, Exhibits Responsibility, and Demonstrates...
