Hello to middle school ECCS Online Academy (ECCOLA) parents and students,
Thank you for your patience as we plan a successful, first semester, learning experience for your child in an online environment. We are excited about the collaborative work that has been done across all three middle schools and the daily class schedule we have been able to build to maximize learning for your child. To view your child’s schedule, please have your child log into Infinite Campus.
In addition, some useful information is included below for students and families enrolled in ECCOLA.
OLA District Orientation: If you were unable to be part of the OLA Orientation by the district, here is the link to watch the recording version. You will find it at the bottom of the Community Engagement Information sessions page.
School Pictures: Pictures for students in the online academy will take place on October 28th at Chaska Middle School East for all three middle school ECCOLA students. This is a distance learning day for in-person students so the building will be empty and you will be able to sign up for a specific time to have your child come for pictures. More details will be shared as the date approaches.
ECCOLA Electives: Some students will notice that they have an ECCS Online support class instead of an elective choice. We realize some students may be disappointed to miss an elective opportunity, we made this difficult decision based on a couple factors. One, parent and student feedback from the spring indicated it is difficult to manage seven classes in an online environment. We prioritized their core classes and extra support for online learning if needed. Additionally, many of the elective opportunities in our in person setting are hands-on courses that are difficult to replicate in an online environment. We believe that this decision best supports our ECCOLA learners.
Music/Personal Wellness: You will also notice if your child is a Band/Orchestra/Choir student these classes are not scheduled opposite of a Personal Wellness class like they are in the buildings. Students will not be required to complete Personal Wellness objectives for a grade but will have access to suggested activities related to Personal Wellness standards in order to encourage consistent activity during their online semester.
ECCOLA Advisory: All students’ advisors are specific to the building they are enrolled in, some may be ECCOLA only students and some will be both ECCOLA and in person classmates from a student’s home school building. We felt that it was important to keep that connection to ECCOLA students’ home building for an easier transition back.
Communication/Newsletters: Communication will continue to be important for your family, so all buildings’ monthly newsletters will include a section specific to the Online Academy families.
School Supply List: There is not a separate school supply list for our online academy students. Please refer to the grade level supply list for your child and determine if items are needed in the home. For example, a backpack is probably not a necessity at home.
Daily Bell Schedule: Students in the online academy will follow the bell schedule that is being used in all buildings to check in with their courses and teachers. Students will be receiving a Week at a Glance (WAAG) from each teacher detailing expectations around these check-ins. There are a couple of courses that will happen asynchronously (at different times than a school class), so they will not be expected to check-in daily for those courses (Personal Wellness, Choir, Band, Orchestra) unless specified by that teacher. These teachers should be reaching out to further explain to your child.
Daily Schedule: Please use this daily schedule as a guide for when your child will be checking in with their synchronous (life, in real time) classes.
Tuesday, First Day of School: You should be receiving communication from your child’s teacher regarding the schedule and meets codes for Tuesday. Meets codes will be the teacher’s first and last name. For example danamiller Tuesday is a seven period day for all middle school students both Hybrid and Academy students. Please know that Tuesday will be a day of learning for us all and we will partner to work out problems we will encounter during the first week.
Material PIck Up: We are working through procedures for material pick-up and will be in contact with families as soon as possible.
We look forward to partnering with you as we continue to improve our ECCS Online Academy and support our learners through a new experience. Please reach out to your home building principal with any questions. Thanks for your patience as we work to provide all learners a successful first week.
